Our first Catalina featured image comes to us from Sean Dixon, who shared this photo of her mother, Mary Stewart Dixon, at Lovers Cove in about 1927. Sean and her family still swim at Lovers Cove every year and we appreciate her sharing this treasured family memory.
Located just on the other side of the Cabrillo Mole boat terminal, Lovers Cove has long been a destination for Catalina Island visitors eager to explore the underwater world. Just after the turn of the century, innovative fishermen realized that if they replaced the bottom of their rowboats with glass, they could charge visitors to see the “undersea garden” just below the surface at Lovers Cove on Catalina Island. Today, Lovers Cove is home to much larger glass bottom boats as well as semi-submersibles, both of which offer tours throughout the year. Powerful undersea lights also make evening tours to see the cove’s nocturnal inhabitants an option. For those who prefer to explore on their own, Lovers Cove is one of the best places to snorkel on the West Coast, with a protected shoreline and a variety of marine inhabitants. Several businesses rent snorkel gear on Catalina Island and guided tours are also available.
