Catalina Island landmarks can be found in a number of locations, particularly in Avalon. The Catalina Island Casino, with its red tile roof and distinctive architecture, is one of the most iconic landmarks in California, but several others, including the Holly Hill House, Avalon Pleasure Pier and Chimes Tower also grace myriad snapshots and souvenir postcards.
One Catalina Island landmark is seldom available for public scrutiny. The Avalon Tuna Club has been a tribute both to big game fishing and marine conservation for more than a century. Founded in 1898 by Dr. Charles Frederick Holder, the club has hosted a number of anglers whose fame extends far beyond their fishing abilities, including Winston Churchill, Cecil B. DeMille, President Herbert Hoover, and Charlie Chaplin. Perched over Avalon Harbor, the storied club houses photographs and trophies that document the history of sports fishing in Southern California.
Once a year , the Avalon Tuna Club opens its doors to the general public as a fund-raiser for the Catalina Island Museum. Only 60 tickets will be sold, with tours taking place on Saturday, August 13, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Tickets are $30 for museum members and $35 for non-members.
