For nearly 100 years, Catalina Island has been recognized around the world for its most distinctive landmark. The Catalina Casino is home to a ballroom, a theatre and spectacular views of Avalon Harbor. That iconic landmark is also home to one of Catalina Island’s most memorable special event.
Each year, the Catalina Island Museum hosts the Catalina Silent Film Benefit, bringing the era before “talkies” to life in one of Southern California’s great movie palaces. This year’s line-up will feature the artistry of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd with One Week and The Kid Brother taking the screen. Accompanying the films will be Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, a renowned orchestra legendary for both scoring and accompanying silent films around the country.
The Catalina Silent Film Benefit brings the 1920s to life and Catalina Island Museum staff encourage those who like to dress up to arrive in period costume. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed couple, best dressed individual and best character from each film.
Proceeds from the Catalina Silent Film Benefit, which is sponsored in part by Catalina Island Real Estate and Catalina Island Vacation Rentals, support the museum and its mission to share and preserve Catalina Island’s fascinating history. Tickets are $25 for museum members and $28 for non-members. The Catalina Island Silent Film Benefit will be held on Saturday, May 21. The films begin at 1 p.m.
