People think of a lot of things when they think of Catalina Island. Pristine beaches, quaint streets, unique adventures. Fascinating history, unspoiled wilderness, unforgettable vacations. What they don’t tend to think of when they think of Catalina Island, is a winter wonderland complete with an ice skating rink.
Thanks to the Santa Catalina Island Company that may all be changing – at least one weekend of the year. Descanso Beach on Catalina Island, normally a haven of pristine beaches, swaying palm trees and cocktail service on the sand is the site for Winter Wonderland, a weekend-long family fun extravaganza. Introduced last year, the unique event was an instant hit with Catalina residents and visitors alike. While the centerpiece of the weekend was ice skating on a rink imported from the mainland, the weekend also included an array of activities for the entire family.
This year’s Winter Wonderland will be even more spectacular. Planned attractions include the ice rink as well as bounce houses, simulated snowboarding and a Polar Express train ride. Activities such as face painting, crafts and carnival style games will also be available. It’s all scheduled for Dec. 4-6. Activities are available for a small charge, or bring a donation of non-perishable food or an unwrapped toy for $10 in activities tickets.
