Catalina Island features several iconic landmarks. The pre-eminent landmark is, of course, the Catalina Casino, which has represented Catalina Island around the nation for nearly a century. Chimes Tower, the Holly Hill House and the green Pleasure Pier have also achieved iconic status, as has the Inn on Mt. Ada.
Built in 1921, the home at the top of what is now Mt. Ada, was commissioned by William Wrigley, Jr. for his wife, Ada. Mr. Wrigley chose the location of the home carefully – it’s known for receiving Avalon’s first light at sunrise and the last light at sunset. The elegant home features several sitting areas, a sunroom, expansive porches and unbeatable views of the mainland, the Pacific and Avalon – Mr. Wrigley was able to watch his Chicago Cubs at spring training in Avalon Canyon from the home.
Today, Mr. and Mrs. Wrigley’s home is the Inn at Mt. Ada, one of the most luxurious bed and breakfasts in Southern California. The homes six bedrooms are now open to guests – many of whom make reservations more than a year in advance. The home is also open to the public one day of the year, for the Open House at the Inn at Mt. Ada. Once one of Avalon’s most popular holiday events, the open house is being revived this year and is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 10 from 2 to 6 p.m. It will feature tours, a raffle and live music and is a fundraiser for the Catalina Island Foundation.
