walking in catalina for the first time

With more than 20 million people living within a relatively short drive and an hour boat ride from Catalina Island, it’s a surprise that so many have never visited this island paradise. Many visitors are discovering Catalina Island for the first time – welcome to our series about what not to miss when you discover paradise for the first time.

Most first time visitors arrive in Avalon, either via Catalina ferry boat or aboard a cruise ship. Either way, the small-town charms and Mediterranean atmosphere of this island village is immediately apparent. While Catalina Island golf cart rentals and bike rentals are readily available, one of the best ways discover the wonders of Avalon is to take a walk. Whether looking for a casual stroll or a strenuous workout, walking in Avalon offers myriad options.

The most obvious walk is along the waterfront. Officially named Crescent Avenue, but frequently referred to as Front Street, the center part of this walk stretches from the boat terminal at the Cabrillo Mole to the landmark Catalina Casino. Along the way, you’ll pass many quaint shops and tempting restaurants while enjoying spectacular vistas of Avalon Harbor. If you have more time, this walk can easily be extended in either direction. On the other side of the Catalina Casino, the walk leads to Descanso Beach, a beautiful enclave where you can enjoy cocktails on the sand and a number of adventures and activities. Continuing your walk on the other side of the Cabrillo Mole will lead you past picturesque Lovers Cove and along Pebbly Beach Road, where you’ll stroll along the Pacific.
